NSI Investing in the Future

At the AHN Neuroscience Institute, residents are the heartbeat of our mission. They are the next generation of neurosurgeons and neurologists who will push the boundaries of medicine, deliver life-saving care and bring hope to patients and families in their most critical moments.

Their training extends far beyond the classroom — it is immersive, rigorous and deeply human. From mastering advanced surgical techniques, to presenting pioneering research, to stepping into lifelike simulations that test both skill and compassion, our residents are prepared to lead with excellence when every decision matters.

This kind of transformative training is only possible through the generosity of people like you. Your support fuels education, innovation and discovery, ensuring that AHN residents have the tools, experiences and mentorship to carry neuroscience into a brighter future.

When you give, you aren’t just supporting training. You are saving lives, advancing science and shaping the future of care.

General Neurosurgery Resident Education Funding

Empower the next generation of neurosurgeons. Designate your gift to the greatest need in our residency program, funding vital teaching supplies like advanced anatomical models, cutting-edge board preparation software, and subscriptions to top-tier journals and educational platforms.

Neurosurgery Resident Cadaver Labs and Simulations

The BIOSKILLS Training Curriculum at Allegheny General Hospital’s Center for Surgical Arts represents the pinnacle of surgical education. Residents gain rare, hands-on experience in spinal and cranial procedures through advanced cadaveric training led by world-class faculty. These sessions, sustained by the generosity of our supporters, equip the next generation of neurosurgeons with the technical mastery, confidence, and vision to tackle the most complex challenges in medicine, ensuring patients receive nothing less than extraordinary care.

Annually, we also host an intensive two-day simulation experience designed to prepare residents for the most challenging moments they will face in the operating room and beyond. Using cutting-edge simulation technology and highly trained actors as standardized patients, residents are immersed in lifelike scenarios that test not only surgical skill but also communication, teamwork, and crisis management. This innovative program transforms training into true mastery ensuring that AHN neurosurgeons enter practice with the precision, confidence, and compassion to save lives when every second counts.

Annual Neurosurgery Resident Research Symposium

The Annual Neuroscience Residency Research Symposium showcases AHN’s residents as they unveil groundbreaking research that is redefining the future of neurology and neurosurgery. This prestigious event unites clinicians, scientists, and industry leaders in a powerful exchange of ideas and innovations, driving discoveries from the lab to the bedside and fueling our collective mission to transform patient care through science, education, and collaboration.

Annual Neurological Society of Pittsburgh Meeting

The Neurosurgical Society of Pittsburgh (NSP) was established in May of 2023. The society consists of faculty, residents, and advanced provider practitioners from the Neurosurgery Departments of Allegheny Health Network (AHN) and the University of Pittsburgh/University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and was created for physicians and residents from both institutions to collaborate with each other, and to discuss the latest advances in the field of neurosurgery.

Annual Joseph C. Maroon Aequanimitas Award Fund

Each year, a lecturer is chosen to promote and celebrate physician wellness and is centered around the concept of "Aequanimitas." This term, eloquently defined by William Osler, embodies the ability to remain calm, composed, and clear-minded under pressure – a quality of immeasurable importance in neurosurgery. (EDIT HERE) The guest speaker shares their invaluable insights on neurosurgery, their personal journey, the lessons they’ve learned, and the advice they can offer the next generation of neurosurgeons. During the event, we also recognize and award a Neurosurgery faculty member or resident who exemplifies and promotes these principles of Aequanimitas.

General Neurology Resident Education Funding

Advance neurological care by supporting our residents' education. Your contribution equips them with critical teaching resources, including specialized diagnostic tools, access to innovative research databases, and comprehensive board review courses, fostering their expertise in diagnosing and treating complex neurological conditions.
