Pediatric VIEW Program

Allegheny Health Network’s Pediatric VIEW Program is the only NICU that conducts a systematic screening for infants at risk for CVI. CVI is the leading cause of visual impairment in children in first world countries including the United States and yet, the only setting in which screening for CVI takes place is at Allegheny Health Network’s West Penn Hospital.

Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) is a temporary or permanent visual impairment caused by the disturbance of the posterior visual pathways and/or the occipital lobes of the brain. It is a condition that indicates that the visual systems of the brain do not consistently understand or interpret what the eyes see. The presence of CVI is not an indicator of the child's cognitive ability.

Pediatric VIEW had been in operation at AHN since 1999.  The services provided at Pediatric VIEW have supported nearly 1000 families who travel to AHN from as close as the greater Pittsburgh area to as distant as Hong Kong.  Patients range in age from infancy to 18 years of age.

Within AHN, our objective is providing patients with the right care, at the right place, at the right time. This means that we are at the epicenter of discovering new ways to treat children with cortical visual impairment (CVI).

With appropriate resources, patients will have greater access to evaluation and intervention and we can continue to expand the specialized care for children and families who are impacted by CVI.

AHN is grateful to you for your support of its mission and, specifically, the Pediatric VIEW Program.

Where Your Donations Go

A gift of health is one of the most enduring gifts you can give. When you give to any of our hospitals, you join thousands of others who know how good it feels to contribute to the health of our community.

Because of your gift, the hospitals of the Allegheny Health Network are better able to provide facilities, buy specialized equipment, fund research, provide medical education and care for our patients.

We are grateful to the many donors who have given so generously over the years, and we know that our patients and families will benefit greatly from your support. Each gift is deeply appreciated and helps us to continue providing the best healthcare possible for the people in our communities.
