Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Sixty years ago, Allegheny General Hospital stood at the forefront of international cardiovascular achievements – which has delivered us to our leading role in providing the cutting-edge medicine and surgery of the future. We’ve long wanted to honor our hospital’s esteemed place in cardiac history, while highlighting how those turning points led us to where we are today.

A few months ago, while preparing for this event, a treasure trove of handwritten patient charts, ledgers and collegiate exchange from the clinical practice of Dr. Edward Kent, AGH’s Chief of Surgery from 1957-70, and his new partner, Dr. George Magovern, Sr., arrived in our office. These original records, from some of the hospital’s earliest cardiac patients, dated back to the late 1950’s. These relics painfully record the setbacks and joyfully accent the advancements in their burgeoning field.

We’d like to share this fascinating story that has gone from barely saving a life sixty years ago to healing thousands each day, with a special focus on the hospital’s part in this incredible history.

To celebrate our achievements, we are hosting a symposium that will present:

• A series of patient stories highlighting the evolution of cardiac medicine and surgery in Pittsburgh.

• A panel of cardiovascular physicians who were instrumental to AGH and testimonials from individuals who have received care throughout the years.

• A new display case highlighting Allegheny’s cardiac accomplishments from 1957 to 2017.

Please join us to mark our sixty years of excellence and innovation in cardiovascular medicine and surgery and discover what the future at the Allegheny Health Network holds.

Sincerely,

George J. Magovern Jr., M.D. and Srinivas Murali, MD
