Perinatal Palliative Care Program

"...finding comfort in knowing someone cares."

When a mother is carrying a baby that will not live after birth (with a life-limiting diagnosis or anomaly), the best option is often palliative care. At West Penn Hospital, we have a multidisciplinary Perinatal Palliative Care program. This program offers family-centered care to affirm parenthood, facilitate bonding, and make memories - from the prenatal diagnosis through their time of grief.

Perinatal Palliative Care Program

"...finding comfort in knowing someone cares."

When an unborn child is diagnosed with a disease, especially a fatal disease, it is at tragedy for expectant mother and her family. During this crisis, the family may experience shock, anger, disbelief, and despair. To help families come to terms with the situation, we offer palliative care that offers emotional, spiritual, social, and symptom support.

The Perinatal Palliative Care program can help all women who learn their babies aren't expected to live. Some women chose to end their pregnancy. Others choose to continue their pregnancies and let their baby’s life unfold. Some babies may be still born while others may survive for a short time after delivery. All of these women and their families have complex and special needs that require expert care.

Dr. Marta C. Kolthoff, a board-certified OB/GYN and reproductive geneticist, leads the multidisciplinary Perinatal Palliative Care team at West Penn Hospital. We bring together professionals form maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive genetics, neonatology, nursing care, and bereavement/social work services.
